How to Choose the Best DJ Speakers ?– Ultimate Buying Guide

After reading all our reviews for products of the best DJ speakers in terms of options and choices, you might feel like you are better equipped to make a decision especially if you are finding the right kind of set to start your lucrative DJing career. While there are several excellent options on our list that you can choose from but we have decided to add in a detailed buying guide as well to make things easier.

This buyer’s guide will be extremely important for first-time users that have no experience since it can be daunting to invest a lot of money into a potential setup system. However once you have done the proper amount of research, you will be far better equipped to make the choice yourself. To start, we are going to look at the main questions that you should look into when purchasing a DJ speaker set and then, we are going to answer a few of the most frequently asked questions.

To start, here are the main questions with regard to the specifications:

How big is the size of the speaker?

The first and most important consideration has to the size of the speakers you are looking to purchase. By and large, it has been found that bigger might just be better. This is perhaps because bigger speakers can handle a greater amount of power. Alternatively, they also work just as well with lower frequencies.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with investing in smaller-sized speakers as they also deliver excellent sounds in the mid to high range, when you go above this, they are more prone to distortion, especially in the bass. To correct this imbalance, you will need to invest in a subwoofer which of course is an added cost.

So, why not just invest in a more powerful and larger speaker which can handle a full scope of frequencies for the smooth and vivid sound all by itself.

How durable is the speaker?

The external is just as important as the internal and this is why you have to ensure the speakers you buy are sturdy and durable. A good kind of speaker to look at are those that have an internal construction made of titanium and steel. If you are aiming to incorporate much travel into your career as a DJ then, you will need a tougher speaker set so it can withstand the wear and tear that comes along with this.

Another significant factor that is correlated with durability is how energy efficient the device is. If your speaker isn’t energy-productive, you risk buying a product that may not last as long as you would like it to. An easy way to figure this out is to simply take note of how much power the speaker needs before you purchase it. This will allow you to ensure that it doesn’t get damaged at higher frequencies.

Should you get active or passive speakers?

Another important consideration as a DJ is to ponder over whether you should get active or passive speakers! When it comes to Active Speakers, they are an extremely versatile solution that is a speaker and an amplifier together. Since they have internal adjustment systems, active speakers are easier to operate as you can factor out having to set up and adjust the sound design.

The other option that you have is in the form of passive speakers which is just the opposite of the former as you will need to attach an external amplifier. You will also have to make sure that they have been properly harmonized with their subsequent power ratings as they can’t withstand higher frequencies and may get damaged.

So why do professionals even opt for passive kinds? Well, they allow more room for creativity and self-expression. Also, since the amplifier is a separate entity, if it breaks down, you can easily just buy a new one or have it repaired, instead of working on the entire product as one.

How much is the power rating?

A speaker’s capacity or power rating is also just as important as any other factor. This is usually quantified in Watts and it shows how much force the speaker can deal with without getting damaged.

You can look at power ratings via either peak or RMS. The RMS power rating is persistent: it discloses to you how much nonstop power it can deal with while being used. The peak power rating, however, is quick: it reveals to you how much force the speaker can deal with at once.

Now that we have the specifications out of the way, let’s delve a bit deeper into the main questions that users ask frequently!

How to connect the DJ controller to the speakers?

One of the most useful tools that any DJ in modern times should have is their controller. This is because you will not need bulky and unnecessary equipment such as mixing tables to mix music and create your unique sound with ease. Of course, the trick is getting them to work and setting them up which isn’t always the easiest task especially if you are inexperienced.

Therefore, you need some prior practice when it comes to your DJ controller, especially in terms of how to connect it to different kinds of speakers. Of course, to answer the question on how to connect a DJ controller to speakers, the most important element is the kind of cables you use.

You will need a few different kinds and the two main kinds of cables for this are either a TRS or an XLR cable. The good thing is that most will be compatible with both options so you have some choice. The other most obvious specification is a power source, but setting this up is fairly easy to master.

When you have your controller, the first step is to familiarize yourself with it. This means you should know exactly where and what kinds of input options are available to you on the controller. That way, you can figure out what wire and cable go where so there is no confusion about the cables getting mixed up. The next step is to pair the jacks and connector cables together so that you can get started!

Next, you will have to hook up your speakers to your sound interface and an amplifier if that is a requirement. If you are aiming to work in larger areas and with larger crowds, then of course you will need PA speakers since they can cover a greater venue with ease. While it is true that you won’t need to relearn this every time you switch or use a new kind of speaker, it is also true that setting up keeping the specific system in mind makes your experience more streamlined.

It is important to remember that while some kinds of speakers are far easier to set up and connect to your controller, this does not mean that they are ultimately better when it comes to performance. Before you make that connection to your audio interface, always make sure you know whether the gadget you’re using is an active or passive speaker. This of course is essential because it determines whether or not you will need an amplifier.

When associating with speakers that are of the active variety, you won’t need to stress over purchasing a separate amplifier since it will be built-in. This can allow you to work quicker as no adjustments will be needed externally and setup will be simpler. All you will require is a sound interface that you can associate with the speakers so the sound flows into the speakers.

When it comes to finally connect the sound interface, the kind of connection you will require is very important and this may be either an XLR or phono link. The right end of the cable must be attached to the sound interface and the other directly into the speaker. As a pro tip, never attach the cables to either device without switching the power off for safety.

If on the other hand, the kind of speaker you are connecting to is passive, then at that point once more, ensure you have the correct cables available to use to interface your hardware. The only real difference here is that you will need a sound interface, the speaker, and an amplifier as well.

That’s not all, however, as the amplifier needs another cable to be attached to the sound interface. This can either be an XLR or an RCA.

What kind of speakers do DJs Use?

There are a ton of varieties of speakers that you may use if you are a DJ however, these will vary depending on the scope of your performing activities. The first kind is the studio speaker, planned for the most part for precise playback at low and moderate volumes. As the name infers, these speakers have been engineered mostly for studio or internal use and are not the right kind of fit for playing music at higher volume levels and in open areas.

The other option is, of course, the mighty PA speaker, which is the choice of many professional DJs as it can play at stronger volumes and is intended for settings with bigger groups. This is because if you are searching for speakers that you carry along for live functions with larger groups, then PA speakers are the most ideally equipped systems for an enhanced experience.

The important thing to remember as well is that all speakers are classified as either active or passive speakers. The distinction between the two is straightforward: the passive variety speakers require an external amplifier to deliver sound frequencies at higher volumes while dynamic speakers do not have that issue.

So, if you wish to add more range to your system, then definitely opt for passive kinds since you can add an amplifier to your arsenal. Alternatively, active speakers are an all-in-one solution, of course, this is much better for inexperienced users even though adjusting the controls is slightly trickier in some cases.

DJ speakers need to have a full scope of frequencies so they can do justice to all the different sounds in your set. Another important consideration is that for DJs, your speakers ought to have both a low-range woofer for the low frequencies and tweeters for higher frequencies.

How to connect DJ mixer to the speakers?

If you wish to connect the DJ mixer to speakers, it is important to remember to only attach your 2 systems via specialized cables instead of any normal kind. This is of course because regular ones have not been made to deal with the immense amount of electrical current that is required to power speakers.

Whether you should use jack connectors that are circular inputs or a jack and lockable connector adapter meant for speakers on the connectors depends entirely on the kind of speakers and amp you have. One important consideration is when you might need to attach wire clamps to either end and that is usually when the cable you are using does not have connectors attached.

A good tip is to continuously ensure that the passive speaker’s capacity limit coordinate with the enhancer it’s associated with. In case you’re hoping to connect different sound sources to your amp, you definitely will need a mixer. This is because with amplifiers you won’t get a ton of input choices and this might limit you.

On the other hand, active speakers will not require amplification from external sources and this means connecting directly to your sound source will be a breeze. Another interesting thing to ponder over is that RCA outputs are usually the ones you’ll find on a mixer. They also come with either XLR sockets or jack connectors depending on the brand and make of the device.

Of course, all of this is purely dependent on what kind of performer you are; if you perform live and in larger areas then you will need to invest in a good quality PA speaker set. However, if you are a slightly smaller scale performer then it is always better to invest in active speaker sets instead.

Is there a necessity for a subwoofer?

A Subwoofer is a low recurrence transducer that you can easily attach with a speaker for more incredible bass sounds that are clearer. The important thing to remember is that most speakers you will purchase already have some sort of subwoofers inbuilt, so utilizing a subwoofer truly relies upon individual preference.

Since the size of a speaker can influence its range and frequency, a bigger speaker might have the option to deliver clearer bass sounds, and that too without help from a subwoofer. While of course, it is not a set rule to get a subwoofer, it is a choice that many DJs make because they take up the sole responsibility of having to deal with the maintenance of bass sounds and this cuts off some of the pressure from other components. This means you can make your speakers last longer and work more efficiently.

Conclusion

That said, this list of Best DJ Speakers comes to an end. Now that you have all the information you can choose your desired product from the list of unbiased reviews. Our experts also recommended one product to make sure you don’t have to spend too much time with the research.

I was looking for a 15″ speaker with the best Base kick but no loose rumble or distortion. The JBL EON615 is that speaker. The 1,000 watts reaches the back of the room in large venues. The sound is clean and tight, even the Mid’s behave. It arrived in 3 days and I had it out of the box and playing in 15 minutes. I bought one to test the sound and features and then I bought another just days later.
